Jean Genet, a brain researcher and an autism survivor himself, truly believes that psychotropic drugs (i.e. Risperdal) can produce negative responses for the child over time. Although it is a stimulant drug which is known to fight ADHD, it is not immune from negative consequences. This is why kids with autism should be given better forms of treatment if possible.

What psychotropic drugs do is that they use the central nervous system’s energy as a fuel to the responses that they produce. However, the time it takes to entirely use this energy is relative to the child. The more active the child is, the faster the consumption of this energy will be.

If you want to detect when the psychotropic drug is about to exhaust the energy of the child’s central nervous system, you can do so by observing how aggressive the child’s behavior is. If s/he cannot sleep easily, lacks appetite and is unusually depressed, then the energy has most likely been used up. And since kids with autism are usually very on-the-go, it is easy to detect this behavior.

They say that when the symptoms of energy loss begin to surface, you need to increase the dosages. But then again, the symptoms will only become worse.

Jean Genet feels it is highly essential to closely observe how the child responds to the drugs that s/he takes and this should be done with your doctor in order to monitor the doses too.

Genet also recommends a gluten essential in the neutralization of the consequences of psychotropic drugs. Also, corn and soy should be removed from the child’s diet.

Yeast must be injected in the diet, as it can reduce hyperactivity and sudden tantrums. Melatonin is good as well. It can induce better sleep. Allergy testing is likewise recommended, as it is important to monitor the responses to whatever the child takes in. Kids with autism need to have their diet closely monitored.

Be sure you are one of his/ her watching eyes.

And if you have never heard of chelation therapy, you should consult your doctor about it. It is a non-evasive way of assisting the child’s body to remove the toxins which are brought about by taking psychotropic drugs.

Lastly, for the child’s emotional growth to come full circle, remember that the basics of discipline still follow. Calmly delineate what is right and wrong and never forget to be a role model to your kids.

Just when we thought they weren’t paying attention, kids with autism are pretty sensitive, aren’t they? Explore Jean Genet’s website and discover what Byonetics is – an affordable and viable autism alternative treatment for kids with autism.

Karen Newton, Internet Marketer and Author, writes on behalf of Byonetics.org and 2-B-Well.org in support of Jean Genet’s breakthrough Byonetics autism program.

Aggression and Children on the Autism Spectrum:

We know that aggression is a big problem and there are many medications out there that can help with aggressive behavior, Risperidal being the most common. There are a couple of things I want you to be aware of though with respect to aggression. Trying to troubleshoot, or categorize the type of aggressive behavior can help understand what could be triggering it. Is it continuous aggression that happens throughout the day? Is it more situational aggression? Is it intermittent aggression? Or is the aggression specific towards one family member or one particular sex? Continuous aggression many times can be associated with brain chemistry imbalances and sometimes that needs to be treated medically. But many times there can be some underlying biomedical problems that are happening like pain, inflammation, digestive problems, even bacterial imbalances in the digestive tract can lead to chemical imbalances that promote a child to become more aggressive. So continuous aggression can be indicative of an underlying pain issue, digestive problems or bacterial imbalances. Your child could be having headaches.

If we are looking at intermittent aggression, many times that can be related to a food sensitivity. The gluten and casein free diet we know helps many children on the Autism spectrum. If a child has a sensitivity to wheat or milk and they get that food, it can cause them to be aggressive because it causes an imbalance in their body or just doesn’t make them feel good.

There can be other food sensitivities as well that can lead to aggression. Sometimes doing a food sensitivity profile to determine what kind of immune reaction your child is having is important. Situational aggression many times comes down to particular places or people that your child is around. For example, you child has situational aggression at school. There may be a child in their class that is bothering them. Maybe their environment has changed, a new aide or a new teacher, something that has happened that is triggering that situational aggression.

I have had a few situations where the child is only aggressive towards a particular family member or a particular sex. One example is the child that was only aggressive towards women. It turned out that the child was aggressive to the women in his family and yet he was not aggressive to the males in his family. Sometimes it is just purely behavioral problems at play.

So aggressive behavior we know is quite common. But, if you try and break it down into categories you can understand it better. Is it continuous aggression? That can indicate some type of pain, inflammation, medical problem, etc. Is it intermittent aggression?

Maybe it is related to a food sensitivity. Is it situational aggression? Maybe it is something that only happens at school or in a particular environment. Is your child only aggressive towards one particular family member or towards a particular sex? We know that aggression is a big problem and can be treated and can be dealt with. Once you are able to break it down a little more, it gives you a little more insight about what to do with aggressive behavior and autism.

Don’t let ANYONE tell you there is nothing you can do to help your child. Autism really is treatable! Start your child down the road to recovery from autism. Biomedical Autism treatments and therapies have resulted in many, many children improving, or even even losing their autism-spectrum disorder diagnosis.

Raising a child with special needs is very challenging. I’ve watched my sister work with my nephew who has autism and seen up close how difficult it is to deal with the challenges of disabilities. Watching how my sister interacts with my nephew has taught me so much about how to effectively deal with kids on all levels of learning.

When thinking about kids with disabilities, it’s important not to pigeon hole them all into one group. For instance, my nephew has high functioning autism and communicates at a much higher level than most kids with lower functioning autism. Many people, however, when they hear the word autism assume he has severe communication issues and treat him as such. It’s so important to understand each individual case before make a knee jerk judgment about a child’s particular ability to understand and internalize information.

Whether you live in Florida or California, if you have a child with special needs you have access to government programs to help out with his or her education. Every state has set up specialized programs within the education system to help children with various levels of developmental disabilities function on a higher level. Finding the right program for the right child can take a little trial and error but most special education teachers are highly trained and very capable of figuring out a child’s level of development. It took my sister years to find the right program for my nephew but since then he’s flourished within his group of peers and teachers.

For many children with autistic perception, language learning and pragmatic communication in social contexts constitute an extremely difficult development challenge. The respective ability to speak is not always associated with the appropriate skills to deal successfully with linguistic resources and with the awareness of the different levels of communication in given situations. These children require a specially structured support and training.

Often, the multiple meaning of linguistic terms and the different utilization within variable social interactions can not be fully recognized and applied spontaneously. Moreover, as already stated, with many autistic students reception delays and interruptions repeatedly occur, which stop the respective communication and endanger the necessary reciprocity in social situations with regard to content and personal relationship.

The objectives of a language support class for students with autism are to support the readiness and capacity for communication, the connection with non-verbal communication, the acquisition of the speech and the promotion of speech stereotypes.

The communicative understanding by means of verbal and nonverbal signs is primarily facilitated by greatest possible directness in care, clarity of the semantic and syntactic structure, and by prompt-reinforcing feedback and reference.

The teacher should avoid the use of symbolic or metaphorical language, as the diverse structure of meaning of linguistic terms may not be familiar and therefore impede the understanding in the current social interaction.

When talking to the student it is rather essential to create a direct connection to the current communication situation and to concrete actions. Language is always linked to the concrete acts in situations. The same applies to learning instructions.

The reply of calls to action by the student must be patiently waited for. When repeats become necessary the teacher has to use the same words in the same sentence structure with the same linguistic articulation, as changes in the language may suggest changed contexts and goal of actions to the student.

In this context it is also important to ensure that all caregivers of the student use the same words given the same objects and situations.

The teaching of students with autism demands specific requirements with regards to the speech behavior of teachers and also to the teachers personality.

Speech happens with a calmly, slightly accented, stressed voice. A dramatizing and therewith symbolizing gesture and facial expression, as well as impulsive verbal utterances and a disturbance of the classroom routine must be avoided.

The affirming response to the student’s behavior should always be visual, auditory, and gestural-mimic clearly accentuated. Thus the autistic student will be relieved from the complex task of constantly

re-organizing his or her goal orientation and distinguishing between important and unimportant.

Facilitated Communication (FC) is a newer communication method which is replacing or supplementing the phonetic language and that can be applied to people with autism.

Facilitated Communication does not allow for healing of the autistic developmental disorder and does not replace other proven special educational support options in the areas of perception, movement, language and social behavior.

FC creates a special physical proximity between students with autism and the teacher. Therefore, the promotional attention to the child is intense and fosters their targeted learning activities.

While in traditional education a face to face learning environment is prevalent, a new dimension comes into play in the relationship between educator – autistic child – computer which is characterized by emotional neutrality as well as playful interactivity.

The momentarily exclusion of the direct relationship with the educator, as the computer assumes this role, mitigates the emotional stress which is triggered by social encounters. This can facilitate the learning process.

Today’s common technologies for the education of children with autistic syndrome can be divided into three main approaches which often complement each other, depending on the skills to be developed:

1. Expression and communication skills
2. Cognitive and emotional skills
3. Interaction and social skills

Expression and communication skills

The majority of these programs and technologies have been specifically developed for people with perceptual, developmental and learning disorders. Their general purpose is to increase the linguistic capabilities. When selecting the adequate technology it is important to factor in the degree of existing linguistic skills.

Cognitive and emotional skills

Based on recent experiences in the field of cognitive and emotional processes associated with autistic people, different programs have been developed. With the help of these programs, by using virtual objects, the visual or auditory attention can be encouraged.

Interaction and social skills

Various programs use the technique of role-playing and social training. They provide learning platforms, which are linked to practical situations or relationships of everyday life.

Evaluation

The range of tools based on the new technologies is quite broad. On the one hand this will facilitate the access to new technologies for autistic individuals, opening up new opportunities in terms of educational measures.

On the other hand, precisely because of this diversity, the question of evaluating the needs of the affected person is all the more important. The technology has to be adjusted to the respective capacities and the degree of impairment within the autism spectrum.

There are perhaps close to a million children in the United States living with autism today. There is perhaps four times that number of kids that live in America with various syndromes that fall within the autism spectrum. This information is not meant to scare you; it is meant to give you strength in the realization that you are not alone.

There may not be a cure for autism just yet, but there is a lot of research that is ongoing with the greatest strides achieved only within the last couple of decades. It is only a question of time before someone finds the cause and/or the cure of the severe developmental disorder that has rendered so many children unable to enjoy their childhood, or any parts of their lives whatsoever.

But until that happens, you are going to have to live with the person in your family who is suffering from the condition that disturbs their ability to perceive things or to develop relationships. In that wise, you may want to talk to a psychiatrist or psychologist about what steps you can take, or you may want to just read on and learn ways by which you can handle the disorder without letting it handle you. You see, if you really love the victim enough and are determined to help him or her, you can, even if they don’t realize you are trying to help them. Yes, in such a situation, love and care can help far more than anything else!

I don’t get it. Many people just lose hope too soon, especially when it comes to medical conditions such as autism. This article goes motivational – showing you why you shouldn’t give up just because your loved one has the condition.

You see, no one really knows for sure whether autism can never be cured. All who say it has no cure only know what pertains today. No one knows what tomorrow will bring. The fact that it can’t be cured today doesn’t mean it can’t be cured tomorrow. So, what is very important when it comes to this or similar conditions is to keep an open mind and be hopeful that tomorrow might bring better news, re a cure or lasting solution.

While awaiting such a time however, it’s important for you to learn all there is to learn about the condition and how best to handle it. Your loved one needs your help and your love. Isn’t that why they are called your “loved” ones? This is the time to stand by them and show them the love and attention they deserve. If you can’t spend the time with them because of the demands of your job, then get some help for them, or put them in special homes where they will be adequately taken care of.

What’s important is for you to NOT abandon them or lose hope that all is lost. All is not lost, whether it’s autism or any other seemingly incurable illness! Keep up the faith, believe that tomorrow might bring some good news and it just might!

Autism is on the rise, especially Autism Spectrum Disorders such as Asperger’s Syndrome. It is reported that about three quarters of those diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome are male. A mere one out of ten are women. Upon my diagnosis of Asperger’s Syndrome at the age of 32, I found myself inundated with the typical male stereotypes of this disorder. “You can’t have Asperger’s because you function so well!” Really? I would challenge anyone that claims that I “function well” to talk about my life with me. Lets see, yes, I have been married for eleven years and I have two children. Not that I place my marriage in the news for public scrutiny, but I will admit that our marriage has been anything but easy. In fact, we have been in and out of marriage counseling for years now, and I am extremely vulnerable to relationship predators whom tried to tell me just why I wasn’t happy. Lets see, going down the line.

Career? Well, I owned my own business for ten years. Did I profit? Not really. I made a small living for myself, but in the end I emassed so much debt in order to keep our family in a comfortable “self employment role” that I couldn’t pay it back. Kids? I’m a good mom. Both my children are also diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, and my kids think I’m fun. Anyone else that spends any large amount of time with me will find that I am adventurous, a joker, silly, and never able to live too serious of a life. My kids dig that, and they prefer to spend their time with me as much as possible. I can’t really say I am anything close to a nuero-typical “soccer mom”. In fact, my kids are oftentimes forced to quit events because of my lack of interest in getting them to their functions.

Socially I could pass as “normal”, in fact, for my entire 33 years I have passed as “typical”. Still, this comes from years of having to supress my true feelings of fear, depression, anxiety, and obsession. Living a life undiagnosed oftentimes leads women with Aspergers to the point of professional intervention. Mine was during my marriage problems. While we were going to a very good psychologist here where we live, we learned that many of our issues were based on not knowing how to “be married”, but also, my psychologist started to pick up on many of the classic signs of autism. I have sensititivities to sounds, smells, to this day I can’t be around a smoker, I can’t stand to hear shopping carts clank together, and if I get into an argument with someone, I will hold a grudge for years.

My social life has been sprinkled with just a couple of good friends who could accomodate for my lack of social graces, and now I find that I have gained a couple of very valuable friendships whom seem to look at me as the “little sister type.” This is important to me because if I am unable to handle being “me” in this big bad world of social reasoning, I will be plagued by depression and anxiety. People with Asperger’s are commongly refered to as “uncordinated”. This is something that I love to correct people on since many women and girls with Aspergers are very athletic. I was a soccer and softball start, yet my life passions are snow skiing and mt. biking where I have succeeded at the competitive levels. Most days you will find me ski mountaineering or out on an isolated mt. bike trail, joined only by my Ipod and large selection of “gospel rap”.

Yes, I have found some social networks for women with Asperger’s. I participate in an online women’s yahoo group geared towards women with Aspergers. I also frequent a site devoted to those who are married to Asperger’s spouses. I find some common factors in the womens groups: An innability to function well in relationships, innability to be in crowded or loud places, and the fact that us aspie women oftentimes place ourselves in dangerous social situations. I have heard of women being robbed at knife-point, even raped because they were lost in their own world of aspie thinking while walking through an empty parking lot. My biggest issues? Knowing when someone is flirting with me. Knowing when to tell my husband that a guy made me uncomfortable because he sat and listened to one of my many aspie-common obsessions which include politics, sports, and religion.

Living our lives as aspie women brings complications and difficulties. For those of us who are able to seek social acceptance and ask for help when we need it; we find that our lives can be outragously happy and rewarding.

Will you follow me on this journey? I hope so. Please check out my blog and follow my adventures as a woman diagnosed with Asperger’s. I want to help present the realities that us oftentimes undiagnosed and little understood women face everyday.

Though I am a teacher first and foremost because I adore the kids, I admit that a wonderful extra benefit is getting to know the children’s families. I was blessed to meet the Ambrose family when I taught two of their three children several years ago. Having one child with special needs, Susan Ambrose has worked tirelessly to help raise funds and awareness for other causes.

Her company, Puzzles For Cures, is pleased to announce that they have received written approval from the Autism Society of America (ASA) to use its patented ribbon, created with colorful puzzle pieces, to manufacture a puzzle of the well-recognized symbol. The puzzle has already been well received as an effective fundraising tool by groups including schools, therapy facilities and united groups of parents.

Today, 1 out of every 150 children (4 out of 5 boys) born in our country has been diagnosed with Autism, which is the fastest growing developmental disability. These puzzles have many benefits. Fundraising dollars are being used for therapies and professional seminars; children are enjoying this educational toy; and Autism awareness is being raised throughout many communities.

Susan fully understands that no disability comes invited and that acceptance is key. She has been faced with many choices and challenges with her own child, which resulted in a strong desire to do something positive to help meet such choices and challenges.

The idea for this product came about one day as she was stopped at a traffic light and noticed an Autism awareness ribbon magnet on the back of the car in front of her. Her Dad, a woodworker and woodcrafter for over 40 years, made the awareness ribbon into an actual puzzle, creating the first prototype.

Puzzles For Cures presented the puzzle to the Autism Society of America and received its approval. Though the puzzles were initially made of wood, the group struggled to keep up with a growing demand. They realized they needed to take it to the next level.

The idea of a floor puzzle evolved, and Melissa & Doug, a well-known manufacturer of high-quality puzzles and toys for children, signed on. The ribbon-shaped floor puzzle is comprised of 36 pieces of “Easy-Clean” surface, which keeps the surface looking like new. It measures 18″ x 36″. All Melissa & Doug products are carefully crafted using “non-toxic coatings and meet or exceed all U.S. toy testing standards.”

If you are interested in learning more about how the Puzzles For Cures Autism Puzzle can be an effective fundraising tool for your group, while also broadening awareness and providing children with an enjoyable fine motor activity, please contact Susan Ambrose at 856-220-0404.

A bit about myself: I produced the Romper Room and Friends TV show and Bowling for Dollars when I worked for Claster Television in the ’80’s and ’90’s. With three kids of my own, I stopped working there in 1996. Today I am a freelance writer and preschool teacher and I am in the process of publishing my first book about preschool advice for parents. Please contact me at: terribakman@gmail.com

For sometime now, awareness about Autism is growing through seminars, movies and even through ad campaigns. Getting the child diagnosed early at the first place is a serious issue. Earlier the disorder is diagnosed and detected, the better for the child to respond to any or every therapy.

Autism basically makes the kid see the world differently and it is the inability of the autistic child to communicate that makes this neuro-developmental disorder vulnerable.

There are several theories and hypotheses on the cause of Autism and a consensus on the same is hard to find. At present, researchers understand that a combination of environmental and genetic factors could be the plausible cause of Autism.

The treatment modalities based on scientific research and studies have evolved to challenge the Autism now. Thanks to advanced medicine research. No big deal still, because there is no standard approach or modality that is considered as a universally accepted treatment for Autism. General approaches are biochemical that deals with diet, food supplements, medication and vitamins, Psycho dynamic approach delves into psycho analysis and then the neurosensory approach which involves daily life therapy.

Additionally, there exist behavioral treatment programs and that include giving instructions to child, prompting the kid to perform specific behavior, praise and reward programs for the child, all these helps to improve autistic condition of the child manifold. However, depending upon the specific condition of the child, certain treatments are more successful than the others.

Appropriate counseling of the parents to help and support the child to grow without inhibitions is foremost and very essential. It is the undivided attention of the parents that is very important to treat the child with restrictions on social interaction. Medications are recommended in extreme cases of symptoms such as seizures, extreme mood change, hyperactivity and even self-injurious behavior, but otherwise training the child and helping him/her and improving their cognitive abilities by playing brain games everyday such as memory, picture crossword, and many more could work like wonder pills in autistic children.
