Today testing for dyslexia can be done online at a fraction of the cost of a conventional psychotherapy session. Did you know that the majority of the people suffering from learning disabilities such as dyslexia do not get diagnosed until they are well into their adulthood and thus miss out on a lot in their life especially in their childhood. However it should not be discouraged into thinking that their dyslexia cannot be overcome in fact there is no age limit at which dyslexia cannot be defeated.

If you have always had a problem concentrating and focusing at any work, have a very poor short term memory, have a tendency to zone out off reality and are at best described as a daydreamer then there is a very good chance that you are suffering from a learning disability such as dyslexia. Most people who suffer from such symptoms are often bored stupid, dumb, lazy and are constantly reminded that they will never be able to anything in life. Such peer and family pressure and take an immense toll on the persons self-confidence, self pride and esteem. Consequently they face problems doing anything in life. In fact their problems continue well into their adulthood and manifest as difficulties coping with work environment, problems in personal life, and these people often return as social failures.

Under such conditions your first and foremost concern should be to get yourself back most. If you find approaching the professional psychotherapist to intimidating then you can take us in one of us to by taking an online test for dyslexia. These tests are designed by professional psychotherapist’s and psychologists and are thus very accurate in their diagnosis. In fact these tests are in many ways superior to the conventional psychotherapy exams as many people tend to also inaccurately then ask certain embarrassing questions about themselves in a conventional setting, which inadvertently affects the outcome of their treatment. Since an online test for dyslexia is taken only by the individual himself, he can answer in full honesty without the fear of intimidation.

Remember that diagnosis is merely the first step towards a treatment. After you receive your diagnosis it is highly recommended that you approach a professional psychotherapist who can aid you in overcoming your dyslexia. Also be sure that you discuss your case with your family and friends so that they may have a better understanding of what you’re going through, as their support will be pivotal in helping you overcome your dyslexia.

Dealing with learning disabilities as an adult can be a harrowing experience. You need not go on living in fear of rejection and denial. Learning disabilities such as dyslexia is a gift which once exploited will allow you to live your life better and more confidently.

Children with CP are more likely to have behavioral and emotional difficulties than the non-disabled kids, which may have a potentially deleterious effect on quality of life. They shouldn’t be treated with pity and sorrow as they experience life as most children do. Great deal of effort is needed to support the social and educational cause. We must recognize the similarity between disabled children and those of other children. Their rights must be ensured as citizens and not as disabled children. They must be allowed to participate in every aspect of society as non-disabled children do.

HOW TO HELP A CHILD WITH CP

Every individual concerned, be it the parent, caregiver, or teacher, must aim at helping the child to be as independent as possible. It may be difficult but the parents must try their best to support the child to cope with CP.

Guiding the child in following way may be helpful:
• Help your child to be as independent as possible
• Support only when needed
• Speak out when absolutely needed
• Get him/ her to know other children with CP
• Technology helps to make mobility and regular activities easier
• Have a positive and realistic attitude towards your child

TO COPE WITH CP

1. Try breathing techniques to do away with frustration.
2. Let the child vent his/her feelings by his irate and out of control behavior till the child is tired
3. Remember your child can do anything if he/she has a mind to
4. Do not worry if the child gets hurt. Just tend to the child normally
5. Give quality time to the child to make him/her feel comfortable in his/her surroundings
6. Look for an experienced therapist who has dealt with CP

HELPING PARENTS COPE

Raising a child having CP is very challenging. After having a perfectly healthy child, the last thing a parent would want is that something terrible happens because of a brain injury. When something goes so terribly wrong, not just the child’s but also the parents lives are shattered as well.

The following tips may help the parents overcome the difficulties and cope with it:

• Be part of a support group with other parents having children with CP.
• Grieve if you must
• Continuing to have interest in your career, personal interests, friends etc. helps lower stress level.
• Spending some time for yourself away from your child helps.
• Don’t let self doubt creep in. Just think of the good things you did for your child.

Cerebral palsy (CP) in children is a neurological disorder caused due to damage to those parts of the brain controlling motor skills. It cannot be completely cured. However, through specialized care and training children with CP may develop skills required to lead a normal life.

Intelligence determines the physical progress that is required in a child with CP. Intelligence may be determined in a child accurately with CP as young as 18 months of age. Facilities for emotional guidance must be available in schools of such children and for parents too. Lest, some children may not be able to achieve the expected physical and mental progress.

Many children who have CP do not have mental difficulties, and many are highly intelligent, which helps them to attend general school. There are many cases, wherein, a child with CP enjoys a near normal life in later stage. Although possible, but is not an easy task. To achieve this, it is necessary that they undergo several therapies and also get special attention in school. Physical therapists help children with CP in developing simple motor skills such as walking with their braces, to stand and to move around without help, etc. Speech therapists would help improving their communication skills. In addition to this, enrolling in special schools will also help in their development. In special schools, the curriculum is so planned that each child gets individual attention. All this helps in child’s all-round development.

Most importantly, teachers who are teaching children with CP should be able to usher a great deal of emotional support and patience. A teacher dealing with such a child may not require to change the whole curriculum, but the child would need to be dealt with, a little differently. However, they should not be given a very different treatment. They are not to be judged only by their physical disability, but should be encouraged to participate in the activities with other children of the class. Observations suggest that children with CP who attend regular schools show great deal of improvement.

Though teachers of children with special needs may have different approaches when dealing with them, the basic quality of a good teacher must include:

–ability to encourage and motivate all children with disabilities,
–patience and flexibility to students who need modified or specific classroom accommodations.
–caring yet strict approach when working with special children.
–the ability to inspire students with special needs in achieving their goals and progress in school and life.

During the Nazi rule, the physically and mentally handicapped were set aside for mercy killing. In 1939, Hitler himself passed a degree requiring physicians to carry out mercy killing of patients considered incurable. Today, the new Nazis are those neglectful of the vulnerable persons or suffocate progress of human-life in general and lives of the disabled people in particular.

Society looks at them as forgotten people -whose “best fate” is extinction. In fact, they are nurtured into destitute men and women and sustained to be so by the community -inclusive of the same non-government organisations claiming to be manading their plight. Specifically within the community, the socio-economic and socio-cultural set-up and decision-making can be critically reviewed.

Moving around rural and slum areas can bring back a lot of discoveries. Among them, will be a simple fact of the physically and mentally handicapped having been tied-up on ropes for fear of being raped or stoned to death; are kept in the backyard -for being “not presentable” and above all; “frightening” to visitors or treated like convicted prisoners -whose main activity (physical and mental) is set to receiving food.

But remember, these are human beings -entitled to dignifying treatment and living. They, for example, deserve access and/or right to medical attention, to learning opportunities, to movement (play and exercise), to employment, to appropriate technology (that considers their vulnerability), access to recreational facilities, right to a healthy environment and, to participate in development of their countries.

In helping integrate them into society, different technological designs have to be developed -to help integrate disabled people -with learning aids -for responsible over the self, to be self-sufficient and at some stage; be socially responsible citizens.

Life skills -involvement self-understanding, dealing with stigma, self-management training, training in social skills, communication, negotiation, goal setting, health science basics and livelihood issues can be added as a concrete program.

Indeed, they too have a life to live and a passion for the goods of it (life). However, the community -in which they live, must care and support them as not only a fundamental contribution, but community responsibility. We could all feel obliged to help these people through not just giving tokens to those begging on streets, but also developing them to self-sufficiency.

Unfortunately, a big section lives in the most poor regions -both financially and intellectually. Some communities, besides, hardly find a dollar a day to live on, they could luck both hope and plans for the disabled dependents. If poverty struck, it would affect the disabled the most, unless rehabilitation technologies addressed their development challenges.

Otherwise, common family reaction is likely to be a matter of locking them up in the backyard as “useless” species and, as the concept “survival for the fittest” develops in their minds. For a poor man’s quest, finding food for the stomach will be first -while others like care for anyone -including disabled people come second -in the hope that by then, damaging impact on the handicapped ones might not be severe.

It is the category of the elderly -who usually pick the pieces and help reduce the socio-economic damage on the disabled people -as the most energetic shun taking on such responsibility. Mainly elderly women, as though concerned by nature, are tasked with the routine need of lifting up and down of the disabled person off the wheel-chair.

Everyone’s (community) engagement or responsibility towards the needs of the disabled persons counts a great deal -as any development initiative -including technological ones -ensures their participation. And along, we make it a community value to be appreciative of them -as people to live and develop with.

Does your child have the most important skills and tools available to succeed in school this year? As parents, we want our children to have all the advantages we can offer, that may include; computers, books, teaching CDs, tutors, all manner of teaching aids, and anything else we feel is necessary to advance our child’s education. These are necessary educational resources we need to have at our disposal from time to time. If our child is making progress in school, we may not notice any problems exist and maybe they don’t. However, there are many children that are making good grades, but work extra hard, even though every resource for learning is available to them. Why is learning easier for one child but difficult for another, when all the other contributing factors are equal and every educational resource is available to them?

To answer this question we must understand that processing information fast and efficiently is at the heart of all learning. Some common cognitive functions are:

how fast and accurately we can read and comprehend
how well we can concentrate
if we can follow a series of steps or instructions, such as a word math problem
how well we can focus and keep attention in the midst of distractions
how accurately we recall information we have just learned – short-term memory
how well we remember information, to recall on a future test – long-term memory
logic and reasonong skills
and much more…

Let’s compare two students Jason and Daniel, age 12.

With all factors being equal:

same age
intelligence
instruction
support
good health

Our first child Jason, is a highly motivated student, but works extra hard to keep his grades up to par with the rest of his class. He sacrifices enjoyable activities and time with friends and family to work hard, just to achieve average grades. At first glance, we would not think of Jason as having a learning disability. In fact, we often commend a child like Jason for working so hard.

In contrast, our next child Daniel, wants to succeed as much as Jason. However, Daniel is failing to keep up with his class and lacks the motivation to continue further down the road of frustration and failure each day. Which child has the disability Jason or Daniel? Most of us would quickly label Daniel as the child as having a serious learning disability.

However, it is likely that Jason and Daniel both have learning disabilities. Jason has just learned a more effective way to cope with the disability, by working extra hard. Jason is succeeding in one area of his life academics while missing out on enjoying other activities. He is staying one step ahead of disaster by working extra hard.

Learning does not have to be so hard and consuming. A child who is working fast and efficiently can learn any subject without struggling. The successful child has, in the majority of cases, more fully developed cognitive tools and skills to use in the learning process. Developing cognitive processing skills and giving a child the tools and techniques to learn, is the backbone of the learning process. Fortunately, cognitive processing skills can be developed through training. There are excellent cognitive training products available for parents and teachers to train children at home and at school. There are specific exercises and techniques that can train children to work and process information faster and easier. Cognitive training can advance a child’s processing speed 2-4 years or more in only a few weeks of training

Sensory Integration Deficiency Syndrome, Sensory Integration Disability Disorder, Sensory Issues…Yeah, there are many names for this disorder, and it seems like they’re all long and difficult to pronounce. If you’ve been diagnosed as having this disorder chances are you were diagnosed by an occupational therapist. Hit it on the head, huh? Well, here’s why…

An occupational therapist named Anna Jean Ayres was the first one to popularize the idea of a disorder that interferes with the normal brain function of sensory integration. She was by no means the first one to research it, but she was one of the first to publish her findings.

That was in 1989. Today there is still a lot about Sensory Integration Disorder Syndrome that still isn’t known. Sorry to change names again, but there a lot of names to choose from.

Most doctors that have actually heard of this disorder don’t really know much about it though. Many who do believe it is nothing more than the side-effects of people with autism, attention deficit disorder, hyperactivity disorder, and several other developmental or neurological disorders. It’s hard for someone with sensory issues to be taken seriously.

Occupational therapists may be the ones who will be most likely to believe you have the disorder, but don’t fool yourself into thinking that’s a cure. Many therapists claim to have a cure VIA exposure therapy, but usually when a patient would get better it was usually due to them outgrowing the syndrome on their own.

There’s the good news. Many children who have sensory issues eventually outgrow them on their own. This is not every case, but most people who have this disorder and nothing else will outgrow their symptoms.

The major signs that a child may have sensory issues include: sensitivity to touch, smell, hearing, sight, or texture of their food (touch is the one you especially want to watch out for). Sensitivity to getting their hair cut. This one’s not always prevalent, but prolonged cases usually involve the child walking on their toes.

Even if you never outgrow the disorder there are many ways to manage it. Walking becomes easier for toe walkers if they lose a little weight. Explaining the condition can also be helpful in dealing with the day to day rigors of basic human contact. If someone touches you in a way you don’t like, simply explain it in a calm, mature fashion.

These tips may sound corny or even too simple to be true, but knowledge is a powerful tool, and if you know what’s going on then you have power.

Good luck.

I am sure by now if you have learning disabilities and are reading this article you know how to read. However from experience I can tell you the whole LEARNING part of reading did not come easy. I remember starring at the pages of my first chapter book. I literally had no idea what I was even looking at. The little words looked completely foreign to me. Many people with learning disabilities can directly relate to this story. This article will share with you how I learned to read fast and accurate in no time flat.

The first step in learning how to read with learning disabilities is understanding you. Any doctor or specialist can classify your learning disability and give you some great reason why you cannot read. That does not change the facts: YOU STILL CAN NOT READ!

The first step is to only focus on the tactics that work for you. Then throw everything else out. When I was learning to ready we literally tired 10 different ways to understand the English language. In the beginning my mother and I tried everything on the market for learning to read. What we finally figured out was the basic stuff that works, and we didn’t even spend another second on all the other matters.

Step two: Master the basics. Learning to identify words either way sounding them out or by repetitive practice. The only way I ever learned to read was by sounding words out. I had no clue how to spell or read most of the words I spoke, yet learned quickly what each sound letters made. I mastered the basics of the way words sounded, rather than spending hours of memorizing words.

Step three: Perfect practice. You have to practice every single day. When you take time to learn how to read or how to read effectively spend that time singularly focused on the task at hand. Most people spend hours and hours trying to learn something because they are busy doing 101 other things rather than focusing just on the task at hand. Perfect practice makes perfect.

Finally, know that learning is a unique experience. It is completely up to you. Do not compare yourself to anyone else. Learning how to read with learning disabilities is tough enough on it’s own. Comparing yourself to anyone else just makes your life that much more difficult.

John T.S. Murphy- went from being the kid that most parents wish they NEVER had. To a success story. Graduating College, Owner of Multiple Businesses, and a Constant Addict for Self Improvement. He has a new book titled “GIVE UP NOW, YOUR A FAILURE!” The book is a how-to guide for people dealing with their Learning Disabilities.

What is CEREBRAL PALSY (CP)?

Cerebral Palsy is a term describing a condition where a trauma caused to the brain adversely affects the motor skills of a child. CEREBRAL refers to the BRAIN; and PALSY is “Lack of required muscle control”. Putting it together it is “Lack of muscle coordination caused by trauma to the Brain”.

UNDERSTANDING CP

It may be said that CP is a condition caused by injury to the brain or nerves during, before or shortly after the delivery of the child. It may be result of some injury or disease caused during the first three years of childhood.

TYPES OF CEREBRAL PALSY

CP may be classified into four categories:
• Spastic-. Caused due to muscle stiffness which makes reaching or walking difficult.
• Athetoid (or dyskinetic)- Caused due some lack of balance in walking and also muscle tics.
• Ataxic – This includes balance disorder and some difficulty in perception of depth.
• Mixed- Children with mixed CP have both the muscle stiffness of spastic cerebral palsy and lack of balance in movement of athetoid cerebral palsy.

SYMPTOMS

• Delayed developmental milestones
• Persistence of infant like reflexes
• Abnormality of muscle tone
• Abnormality of movements
• Deformities of bone structure.
• Mental retardation
• Seizures
• Problems of speech

CAUSES OF CP

Brain damage any time in the first three years of life may cause acquired CP. Damages such as Brain infection (e.g. Meningitis) and Head injury(such as a fall),and other causes such as genetic disorder, blood clot etc..
CONGENITAL CP occurs at birth. Common Causes are infections during pregnancy, infantile jaundice, Rh incompatibility, shortage of oxygen in brain , trauma to head at the time of labor and delivery, and stroke .Babies with low birth weight have more chances of developing CP.

TREATMENT

At present no cure for CP is available. But a proper and methodical treatment does help to improvement the condition and helps the child to attain his/ her potential. Physical therapy, occupational therapy, medicine, surgery, braces etc are some of the treatment and therapies that may help. An early and continuous treatment of CP may lessen the chances of other disabilities and problems that may be caused by the condition.

PREVENTION

The actual cause of CP may not always be known.
Taking following precautions may help:
• Seek proper prenatal care
• Avoid cigarettes, alcohol, and unnecessary use of drugs during pregnancy
• Testing for measles immunity before pregnancy
• Routine vaccinations of baby
• Preventing head injuries
