Overcoming Panic Attacks and the False Wizard

Overcoming panic attacks is a critical quest of each person who suffers from this debilitating disorder. The sudden rapid heartbeat, difficult breathing, nausea, feelings of dread, even chest pains that resemble heart attacks…who would go through these terrifying episodes if they could prevent it? But the person sensing a panic attack coming on feels totally controlled by an unseen malevolent power.

Some therapies focus on conceptually recognizing that one’s fears are irrational, in a left brain kind of way. Unfortunately, tied to this approach is the value judgment that the person suffering is weak and is just not putting forth the needed effort to control their thought processes or emotions. Some very misguided therapists will even try to convince the sufferer that his or her symptoms aren’t even real!

However, the most insightful psychologists of today focus on the role of the subconscious mind in perceiving a threat when one does not actually exist. Our subconscious mind is a repository of all kinds of mysterious impulses and entrenched belief systems. It is loathe to allow the rational mind or the knowing heart to enter into its labyrinth of hidden secrets. Read more…

Got Problems? Tell Someone!

I recently watched that great old classic movie, Crocodile Dundee, and was struck by the following conversation taking place at a cocktail party in NYC:

Sue to Croc: “A shrink, that’s a Psychiatrist”
Crocodile Dundee: “Oh, I didn’t know she was nuts”
Sue: “She’s not nuts. She goes there to talk about her problems, to bring them out in the open”
C.D.: “Doesn’t she have any mates”
Sue: “I guess there aren’t any shrinks in Walkabout”
C.D.: “If you have a problem in Walkabout, you tell Wally, he tells everyone in town, brings it out in the open and there’s no more problem.”
Sue: “We could all use more mates” Read more…

Preschool Children With Autism – The First Steps to Early Intervention

Preschool Children With Autism In my primarily ages as an the first part of childhood teacher in a minimal private preschool, if one of the children in my care was not next the ‘norms’ of development, it was not obvious to me how I is able to do. As we all know, the early childhood field can hold a fast turn throughout of staff in child care centres, and often the Directors or Authorised Supervisors have simply as small amount of or less field experience as further staff. My confidence as a teacher was the key…”was I right in suspecting a learning difficulty?” With little experience and only 3 years of theoretical knowledge at University dotted with intervals of practical teaching, I wasn’t always confident in my “gut feelings” or suspicions of a learning difficulty. With years of teaching experience now behind me, including in early intervention support, coupled with the understanding from a parent’s perspective, I would like to offer some suggestions of what to do when we, as early childhood teachers, suspect that a child in our care has a learning difficulty. The important thing to remember is that it’s not up to us to make a decision that a child has or doesn’t have a learning difficulty. Our responsibilities lie with gathering developmental information, knowing what professionals to refer a family to, and supporting parents through the process Preschool Children With Autism Observations The question I asked myself as a young teacher “was I right in suspecting a learning difficulty”? was more about me and my confidence in my ability. Really, we should be asking the question “is there a possibility that this child has a learning difficulty”? Read more…

The Therapist As a Client – Or Not?

Most therapists I know go into this field to help people. I bet you did too. Humor me for a second as I invite you to do a short visualization exercise.

I want you to think about one of your favorite therapy client success stories. Remember that special client and the pain or confusion they experienced before seeking your counsel. Picture them in your mind when they first came into your office. Remember their posture, tone of voice and the energy they projected. Now, fast forward through your treatment and see them emerging. The pain is less (or gone). The fear is manageable and the future looks incredibly bright. Breathe in the joy that you feel when you look at the transformation with that client.

What an amazing privilege it is to be a therapist.

People share their deepest worries and pain with us. They trust us with their hearts and their future. It is an amazing honor to do this work.

Month after month, we help people. No matter what your theoretical orientation, we do this work because we want to help people. We believe in the healing process of our work. Simply put, we believe in therapy. Incredibly, the Psychotherapy Networker reports: “Surveys find that 20 to 25% of therapists have never sat in the client’s chair.”

When I first read that, I didn’t believe it. Can you? How can we be so clear of the benefits and power of therapy if that many in our profession have never tried it? Read more…

The OCD Cure: How to help yourself or a loved one control their OCD

It was about five years ago when my significant other began to express what I considered the most bizarre behavior. It started with flicking on and off the light switch. Before she would leave a room, she had to flick it off, and then on at least once. I would ask her why she was doing this and she’d just laugh and say something like, “I was just checking how bright the lights were in the corner.” And I didn’t really think much of it. At the time, I had no idea that the beginnings of this behavior would start my quest to find her an OCD cure, while simultaneously finding relief for my anxiety.

Not long after, she would start flicking the lights on and off more than once before she left or entered a room. She would flick them on and off in a quantity that was an even number(although it took me months to realize the significance of even numbers for her). Read more…

The Symptoms of Agoraphobia

The thought of being stuck within a crowd while you are experiencing a call of nature can be anxious for most of us. Despite that idea, the possible embarrassment does not stop most of us from frequenting concerts, the theater or other public and crowded places. However, this is not true for some people. The situation that I have mentioned is one of the symptoms of agoraphobia.

Fear, panic, anxiety and embarrassment, these are the 4 major feelings or symptoms that a person with Agoraphobia mostly experiences. Basically, they have a fear of experiencing an anxiety or panic on a situation that is embarrassing or difficult to escape from. Another concrete example would be the idea of choking in front of a crowd or in the presence of strangers. We know that choking is not exactly the best reason for you to be known for. Moreover, the aid for choking demands another person, which can be a scene stealer. Read more…

Depression and panic attacks – Is there a link between them?

Is there a relationship between depression and panic attacks? The short answer is a definite yes.

The two have the potential to be deeply interrelated, and often you will find that one will lead to the other. Both are psychological issues that need to be addressed as quickly as you can because leaving the problem unresolved will cause problems further down the line.

So what is the relationship between depression and panic attacks exactly? To answer this we must first define what depression is.

Depression is a real mental illness. It can be hard to explain if you have not suffered from it before, but generally it is a constant, nagging feeling of despair and sadness. It can be difficult to get out of if not treated properly and unfortunately is the leading cause of suicide. Read more…
