			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Most people can hardly believe it, but heart attacks, and cardiovascular disease simply didn&#8217;t exist prior to the 2oth century. It is, of course, now the number one cause of death today.</p>
<p>But in the June, 1911 edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association, Dr. James P. Herrick reported on the first known case of atherosclerosis (blockage of the coronary artery) and heart attack. Dr. Paul Dudley White, who later went on to become President Eisenhower&#8217;s cardiologist, read of these cases with interest. He later reported in his autobiography that during his residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital in the 1920&#8217;s, he saw no further cases of heart attack. During the 1930&#8217;s, when he was at Harvard Medical College; he saw them but rarely. How many heart attacks are seen in Boston hospitals today?</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a pretty safe bet that the people of the early 1900&#8217;s were not going to the gym, downing their multivitamin tablets, and following a low fat diet. (Indeed, it&#8217;s estimated that they ate an average of 14% more fat than is common today!) What they were not eating, however; was refined carbohydrates. Sugar &amp; refined flour.<span id="more-3541"></span></p>
<p>There were no Twinkies to be had, no &#8216;Dunkin Donuts&#8217; to get the morning fix&#8230; and no heart disease.</p>
<p>In 1974, a British physician Dr. T.L Cleave, wrote a book titled The Saccharine Disease. As a surgeon in the British Navy, Dr. Cleave had plenty of travel around the world, and he noted that in every culture he studied, obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease did not occur until approximately 20 years after refined carbohydrates, in the form of white flour and sugar, was introduced to the culture.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s the slow nature of the diseases that make refined carbs so difficult for the average person to peg as a poison. If you went into convulsions, and died within minutes of eating a single Twinkie (with its 27 grams of carbs); no-one would dare to eat Twinkies unless they wished to commit suicide.</p>
<p>Yet this is exactly what our society is doing&#8230; our death from cardiovascular disease (the number one killer in the U.S.) may take 50 or more years &#8211; so it&#8217;s not nearly instantaneous and obvious&#8230; yet we are still poisoning our bodies. The dangers of refined carbohydrates, flour and sugar, are what leads to our lack of health and obesity. While many people can understand that correlation &#8211; they don&#8217;t realize that even if they appear to be in excellent health, the proper weight, they may be just as prone to the diseases of refined carbohydrates as the seriously obese person obviously is.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Compulsive eating is a form of eating disorder where people are addicted to food and turn to food to overcome unresolved emotional trauma.</p>
<p>Compulsive overeating may have its beginning in the early childhood years when the child unknowingly turned to food for comfort. Compulsive eaters lack the ability to stop eating when they have consumed enough. They may spend hours eating compulsively and may have more than one eating &#8216;episode&#8217; in a day.</p>
<p>Fortunately, it is possible to treat compulsive overeating completely. The treatment approach consists of medical, psychological and nutritional assistance.</p>
<p>The pharmacological treatment for compulsive eating consists of antidepressants primarily. In some cases, psychological treatment is also provided in the form of behavioral and interpersonal therapy. In the long term, this therapy can help build the self confidence of sufferers.<span id="more-3551"></span></p>
<p>Another important part of the treatment of compulsive overeating involves understanding the nutritional requirements of the body so that sufferers can supply these needs in the appropriate manner. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Everyone has heard about the problem of obesity. And some think it is a new problem. But this is far from true. Over a decade ago the Surgeon General of that time, Dr. David Satcher, expressed concern about an obesity epidemic in America. And as with many things it has been passed on from one generation to the next. So we now find that childhood obesity is a major problem.</p>
<p>This is not hard to understand when you look closer to see the cause of the problem. Obesity stems from our eating habits. We as Americans like to do everything bigger and better than everyone else. We do the same with our food. Go in to any restaurant and the value of the meal is usually associated with the size of the portions. We also like rich and great tasting food. Many people think of foods high in fat, salt, and sweets as the most desirable. It stands to reason if the parents are eating this food so are the children. So we are passing the obesity problem on to our children.</p>
<p>Here are some scary facts. One third of all Americans are over weight. Another third are obese. And what is worse, one third of the children in America are obese. These statistics should be impossible to ignore.<span id="more-3546"></span></p>
<p>The real problem of obesity is not that you feel bad carrying all that extra weight. Instead, it stems from the side effects it can have. Obesity increases the risk of diabetes dramatically. The risk of stroke, heart disease, hypertension, and many kinds of cancer increase with being obese. Along with these problems comes the high cost of treatment. Families are worrying about the cost of health care while contributing to the possibility they will require it.</p>
<p>&#8220;Annual medical expenditures attributable to obesity&#8230; may be as high as $147 billion per year,&#8221; according to researchers at RTI International, a healthcare research organization. (1)</p>
<p>So how do you know if you are obese? Obesity is determined by your body mass index(BMI), a rough calculation of body fat based on your height and weight:</p>
<p>18.5 &#8211; 24.9 is considered normal<br />
25 &#8211; 29.9 is considered overweight<br />
30 and above is obese</p>
<p>For example, if you are 5&#8242;11 and weigh 240 pounds your BMI is 34. This is in the obese range. There are many BMI calculators available. If you want to do the BMI formula yourself, it is: (weight in pounds X 703)/ (height in inches X height in inches). Otherwise, ask your doctor or nutritionist about your BMI so you will know whether you have a problem or not. And as they say, knowing there is a problem is over half the battle.</p>
<p>Americans are starting to address the problem and it is reflected in our fast food industry. Did you know there are more Subways than there are McDonald&#8217;s locations in the United States? The more positive steps the U.S. can take in cutting back on rich, fatty foods, the better.</p>
<p>To summarize, the problem with obesity is health care related problems and not understanding the ability to do something about it. Take responsibility for your health and recognize the problem. This is the first step. Address your diet and exercise habits and see where you stand. But most importantly, do not ignore your own obesity or that of your loved ones.</p>

And what is worse, one third of the children in America are obese. These statistics should be impossible to ignore.  The real problem of obesity is not that you feel bad carrying all that extra weight. Instead, it stems from the side effects it can have. Obesity increases the risk of diabetes dramatically. The risk of stroke, heart disease, hypertension, and many kinds of cancer increase with being obese. Along with these problems comes the high cost of treatment. Americans are starting to address the problem and it is reflected in our fast food industry. Did you know there are more Subways than there are McDonald's locations in the United States? The more positive steps the U.S. can take in cutting back on rich, fatty foods, the better. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>One of the factors about diets that many people don&#8217;t seem to realize is the real nature of a diet &#8211; people have come to accept that a &#8216;diet&#8217; is a temporary thing &#8211; and that as soon as you lose the weight, you can go back to eating sugar, cake, donuts, breads, and so on. (I hail from a firm belief that low-carb is the natural diet of mankind)</p>
<p>But if you want to lose weight &#8211; you have to change the habits of a lifetime that put that weight on &#8211; and then you must remain with your new habits for the rest of your life. So forget the idea that you can simply jump on a diet for a few weeks or a month or two, then go back to your old eating (and exercising!) habits. All that will happen is that you&#8217;ll gain your weight back.</p>
<p>So what allows someone to stay on a diet for the rest of their life? One trick is to allow yourself to cheat from time to time. I eat low-carb &#8211; but that doesn&#8217;t mean I don&#8217;t eat bread, for example. I simply limit my bread to a few slices of toast on a Saturday breakfast. I&#8217;ve made a rule for myself that during the yearly family reunion, I&#8217;ll eat whatever I want. Then when I go back home, it&#8217;s back to my normal (low-carb) eating habits.<span id="more-3526"></span></p>
<p>By allowing yourself to cheat this way &#8211; you avoid the temptation to settle back in to your old eating habits, because you know each time you do it, that you are not eating healthy, but are allowing yourself a small pleasure. I&#8217;ve heard far too many stories of people who believe that since they&#8217;ve &#8216;fallen off the wagon&#8217; so to speak, that they might as well simply stay off, and go back to their old eating habits. But this will not end up in weight loss, it will not improve your health, and you must be willing to accept that your new lifestyle of healthy eating (your &#8216;diet&#8217;) and exercise will last the rest of your life.</p>
<p>This explains why fad diets (cabbage soup diet comes to mind!) will never truly work &#8211; you may take off weight temporarily &#8211; but is this all you want? Learn to cheat, learn to recognize when you&#8217;re cheating, and give yourself permission to do so &#8211; realizing that it&#8217;s not healthy, and you&#8217;ll learn to live with your diet for the rest of your life.</p>

We&#8217;ve all read the headlines of how obesity is on the rise. Along with the growing number of fast food chains, obesity in our society runs parallel with it. We still choose to ignore and fall for their discount advertisements for burgers and fries. Did you know that obesity is one of the major contributors leading to many other serious illnesses and diseases? Almost 30% of American adults are obese. That means 30% of Americans, right now, have a good chance of some sort of illness/disease infection. With that said, it is imperative to watch and take care of our own bodies. One great way to help you keep track of your body is to use a BMI scale, also known as a body mass index scale.</p>
<p>The most popular version of a scale would be the typical bathroom scale. You know the one you stand on and wait around a minute for the dial to stop rocking back and forth, yeah, that one. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We are often envious about those women who have slim waists and those men who sport a wonderful physique. On one hand, this reality cannot be helped because each and every one of us are looking for that special physical attribute that would other people notice us more and would make us have our self-esteems escalated on a different level. For those who want to lose weight, doing so might seem easy at first. Then, when they would already direct their efforts on weight loss measures, they would soon realize that it&#8217;s not easy to follow a weight loss regimen, especially one that is too difficult to follow and has too many restrictions.</p>
<p>Obese individuals are usually suffering from emotional, psychological and physical aspects. They are expected to do something unusual, sometimes good and sometimes bad that affects their health. Being obese clearly draws out the idea of being undesirable and unacceptable in our society. The connection between proper nutrition and mental health is impossible to miss. In many cases, lack of foods cannot perform well. The impact of being obese on children makes them feel awkward, forsaken from the normal ones. They become the apples of intrigues. Being overweight as early as kindergarten brings adverse feelings, feelings of depression, anxiety and loneliness. The social and behavioral developments of school-age obese children are examined on how long they become overweight and at what age.<span id="more-3530"></span></p>
<p>Another point of consideration is the realization that overweight youngsters have up to 10 times the normal amount of a compound associated with inflammation, and another that helps blood to clot. Both compounds are known to raise the hazard of heart attacks and heart disease in adults. Moreover, it was also seen that heavy children have high levels of C &#8211; reactive protein, which is linked to inflammation, and abnormally high levels of the clotting factor fibrinogen. The said study reveals that overweight is a state that should be viewed in a different perspective and it should also be treated cautiously, especially if the cases of overweight involve young children because as it is, the feelings and emotions of these children are already quite delicate and fragile as well.</p>
<p>To the parents of heavy children, our advices are as follows:</p>
<p>a) Let them obey the proper way of eating healthy foods.</p>
<p>b) Avoid eating unhealthy foods and snacks.</p>
<p>c) Let them sleep on time.</p>
<p>d) See to it that they are physically healthy although they are heavy.</p>
<p>e) Try to teach them the appropriate way to lose their weight physically, like swimming, running, biking on certain period of time only.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I woke up one morning, looked in the mirror and saw someone else! That was wishful thinking. I am a former obese person and know the feelings I had all those years when I refused to have a mirror close to me. I still remember the awful feelings in my mind about what I had become. I could see the shame on peoples faces. They were polite, but could I ever feel the stares. I learned to hate myself and continued to eat in order to sooth my pain. Until one day, I really had had enough and started searching for the better me. You know what? Under all that skin, I was there and I am so proud of myself today. Sharing my pride has become a mission for me and I need to tell you why. Do you want to listen?</p>
<p>Obesity &#8211; Do you know the one major difference between being obese or not?</p>
<p>ENERGY.</p>
<p>Why do you eat so much everyday has to be on your mind most of the time if you are obese. Unless you are sick and have a previous condition that makes you fat or that all your children were born obese or you are genetically predisposed to be chubby or all your friends are plus sized and you just joined the club or you live in a neighborhood for seriously overweight people only(I am getting out of breath), their is no reason for you to accept being like this for the rest of your life.<span id="more-3501"></span></p>
<p>That was a mouthful and I know you are thinking,&#8221; who is this guy and what is the point?&#8221;</p>
<p>* I am an expert on obesity because I was one, just like you. If you keep reading this article, you will not get infected by any bug, well maybe only the,&#8221;need to change&#8221; bug. I use to eat until I was so full I could hardly walk.<br />
* I could eat 8 hamburgers with all the trimmings and still be hungry. I just felt this incredible need to eat and eat and eat some more. I never questioned why I needed to eat, I just kept on eating.<br />
* I did not listen to anyone and just kept on eating until I could no longer tie my shoelaces one morning and went to my computer and asked, &#8220;why do we eat?&#8221;</p>
<p>My search engine gave me about 54 million answers to that question and what I got out of that was a wealth of knowledge that astounded me. They did not teach me this in college. I am talking about my life here, and my families lives. Still reading?</p>
<p>The biggest reason why we eat is for ENERGY. Their are many other reasons like pleasure, habit etc. but ENERGY is the #1 reason. After that discovery, I asked myself,&#8221;If I am eating for energy, why am I so tired all the time?&#8221;</p>
<p>Changing all my bad habits did not happen overnight. I did a lot of research and needed to understand where I was going wrong. I got mad at my doctor, at my friends, at my former teachers and many of the people around me for not stopping me. I did and still do assume total responsibility for my body and today I am eating only for energy, well OK, maybe still for a little pleasure. Now I know how, and why I need to eat and you can too.</p>
<p>I still have a hard time realizing that the difference between being obese or not is ENERGY, can you?</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Have you ever wondered why most Americans are getting fatter every year? If you go to your local shopping mall, you can see a lot of people with big guts. It is projected that Americans will have to pay more medical and hospital cost because they are eating unhealthy foods. This would greatly impact the economy because so many people are sick and have to use their own hard income on health cost.</p>
<p>Here are five reasons Americans are getting fatter:</p>
<p>1. Too much fast food restaurants.</p>
<p>Fast food is cheap and generally unhealthy. If you look at any shopping mall today, the majority of the restaurants are usually fast food joints. Furthermore, they are particular attractive to low income people because they are cheap, tasty and convenient.</p>
<p>2. Healthy food cost too much.</p>
<p>The cost of buying apple juice is usually more expensive than buying a can of coke. Also, you will unlikely to find fruits or vegetables at a gas station but you will certainly find a candy bar there.<span id="more-3520"></span></p>
<p>3. They prefer to use a car to travel to work.</p>
<p>It has become too easy for us to use a car to go to work. I know some people that live only 15 minutes away from work but prefer to drive there instead.</p>
<p>4. Americans are good at marketing unhealthy food.</p>
<p>There are plenty of companies that are very good at marketing fatty food. If you see any candy commercial, they usually have a fit and healthy person advertising fatty foods. It creates a perception that you can still eat bad foods but still stay healthy.</p>
<p>5. They prefer to use diet pills.</p>
<p>People want quick fixes and therefore use products like diet supplements to make them lose fat. However, the majority of these supplements don&#8217;t work and they can also be harmful. In some cases, it can make you fatter.</p>

Most of us know somebody personally who can give us advice beyond the work environment that can offer guidance and education regarding weight loss and healthy lifestyle.</p>
<p>Moreover, there are some people who know one hundred percent what they&#8217;re telling people yet are unable to do what they say to others; It is very similar to a person who say&#8217;s do not eat too much of those tasty chips and guacamole but doesn&#8217;t have the will power to restrict themselves. If so, they&#8217;d be on those infomercials selling their success to all types of people.</p>
<p>Individuals who suffer from being overweight or obese have more than likely tried all the diets, seminars, plans and personal trainers during their lifetime. Most of the time it is not education or ignorance but simply the person&#8217;s determination to do what they are supposed to do. With the variety of foods on TV, magazines and everywhere you go it is difficult to accomplish and some people just do not change their ways even if they are bad, unhealthy and sometimes life threatening.<span id="more-3511"></span></p>
<p>It is time to stop blaming your overweight issues on thyroids, diseases family genes or being pregnant and change yourself for the better. If these problems were true then other populations around the world would also have similar weight issues. Evidence our population is overweight comes from various studies.</p>
