Nutrition to Support Healthy Liver Functions

Some people say the liver is the most neglected organ in the body. That’s because it hardly ever calls attention to itself, but works hard to perform hundreds of vital tasks necessary to keep your body functioning smoothly. It’s an organ that works quietly, behind the scenes to ensure that all the other important organs have everything they need to function properly.. But this doesn’t mean we should neglect the liver, does it?

What Does the Liver Do?
The average liver is about 7 inches long, , about 3 inches thick and takes up about 3 lbs of your body weight. That’s a pretty big organ not to notice and you may wonder where it’s hiding! The liver is situated just behind the lower right rib cavity.

Just about everything we ingest, we breathe, or absorb through the skin goes through the liver for detoxification. About 80 percent of the blood that leaves the digestive system goes directly to the liver for further processing. The liver converts these nutrients to a form which the body can use to sustain its functions. Poor nutrition can impair liver functions. In contrast, adequate nutrition can lead to the liver regenerating itself to function efficiently. That is why it is important to take liver supplements or liver vitamins to sustain vital functions of the liver. Read more…

Discover the Benefits of Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Face it. Clinical tests conducted over the last 40 years have proven the benefits of omega 3 fatty acids for a variety of ailments. Inflammation in the body is necessary in order for the immune system to effectively ward off diseases, and to heal wounds. If there is too much inflammation constantly present in the body it can have the opposite affect than intended, and this chronic inflammation leads to disease.

The reason that we now suffer from so many of the ailments that we have simply come to accept, is because we have allowed the ratio of our omega-6 fatty acids to overwhelm the body’s content of omega-3s. Both of these fatty acids are necessary in order to maintain good health, but an overabundance of omega-6 fatty acids is responsible for the prevalence of many preventable diseases. Read more…

How to Find the Correct Dosage of Fish Oil

At one time, parents gave their kids a dosage of fish oil to keep their digestive systems regular, protect against rickets and prevent vitamin A deficiency. Back then, no one knew about the benefits in brain development or the essential nature of omega-3 fatty acids and DHA, in particular.

Fish oils are rich in omega-3 fatty acids called DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid). Fatty fishes are actually the only dietary source of those polyunsaturated fatty acids. The fishes get theirs from marine algae or by eating smaller fishes.

A different omega-3 called ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) is present in vegetable oils, such as olive and flax seed. While ALA is essential to human health, its primary purpose is to be converted to EPA and then to DHA.

Since the conversion process is relatively slow and the amount of conversion varies from one person to the next, most doctors now suggest the consumption of 5-7 servings of fatty fish per week or a daily dosage of fish oil. Some doctors suggest both. Read more…

How Fish Oil Quality Can Make the Difference Between the Maximum Health Benefits or None At All

With so many supplements flooding the market today as more of us choose to make this natural oil a part of our daily routine, there is a real danger of not getting many of the possible health benefits at all. Here is a brief guide so you know what to look for to get the purest and most effective ones.

The fish oil quality has a tremendous impact and if you want benefits like improved heart and brain health, protection against breast and prostate cancer along with a highly effective treatment for arthritis to name but a few, you need to ensure the quality is high.

As fresh fish pick up so many dangerous contaminants today, any supplement you consider should be molecularly distilled. This removes all the toxins like mercury and lead to leave you a safe and pure oil. Many companies skip this step to save money and boost profits, but it is very important unless the purity of the fish can be proved to contain zero contamination.

The only one at present in the world that can claim this is the Hoki fish from the pristine waters off the coast of New Zealand where no contaminants have ever been recorded. Read more…

What's a Healthy Fish Oil Intake Amount to Have Daily?

When it comes to a daily fish oil intake level, many factors come into play. What is more important though than the actual amount you take is the quality of the oil itself. However much of a poor quality supplement you take, you will still receive little or no health benefits. Here’s how to avoid that.

As a rough guide, 1 or 2g a day is a good of a pure distilled oil, but it’s important to bear in mind the levels of omega 3 fats within the oil as these are the ones that provide all the benefits.

DHA and EPA are the two most effective ones with DHA recently being shown to provide most of the health benefits, so the first thing is to look at the individual amounts.

For example my fish oil intake is two capsules a day, each one containing 1000mg of oil of which 280mg is DHA and 120mg is EPA, so I get almost 1000mg or 1g of omega 3 a day.

You will find that most oils have a much lower level of DHA so it pays to find the ones with a 2:1 ratio of DHA to EPA otherwise you will not get the full benefits, especially where brain and heart health are concerned. Read more…

Information About Ginkgo

Ginkgo is a genus that consists of highly unusual non-flowering plants. It also has an extinct species known as Ginkgo Biloba that is regarded to be a living fossil. It is also known as maidenhair trees which are tall, slender, picturesque deciduous trees having fan-shaped leaves. It is native to East China, where it had been revered by various Buddhist monks and was planted near temples. Regarded as a “living fossil,” it is the only remaining species that is now present in the earth of a large order (Ginkgoales) of gymnosperms used to exist in the Triassic period.

One important characteristics is that its form has not changed in millions of years, which is being revealed by fossils which are found to be widely scattered over Europe, North and South America, and Asia. It is valued today as a street tree, and has the characteristic to be exceptionally tolerant of excessive smoke, very low temperatures and requires very minimal water supply. The male and female strobile or parts are borne on different separate trees. The “fruit”, is botanically a seed and is surrounded by a malodorous pulp thus making the male trees to be more desirable as ornamentals. But however, the seed kernel is regarded to be highly esteemed in East Asia as a food. Read more…

Discover the Benefits of Omega-3 for Children

Let’s face it. A number of studies have revealed the benefits of omega 3 for children. It is because of those studies that DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) is now found in many infant formulas. It has always been in human breast milk, but until recently, it was not believed to be essential for normal growth and development.

The essential nutrients are the ones that the body cannot create. They must be present in the diet. The body can use a different omega-3 called ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) to create DHA. So, again, until recently, ALA was the only fatty acid present in infant formulas.

Years ago, doctors recommended some types of fish oil for children, in order to prevent vitamin A deficiency, which could lead to blindness, and vitamin D deficiency, which could lead to rickets and misshapen bones. Read more…
