Headaches and Thirst – What Are They Symptoms Of?
If you’re getting headaches that happen as the same time as a sudden severe thirst you might need to check in with a doctor or ER room. Usually having a sudden headache and a strong thirst is a sign of some form of chemical poisoning. Now bear in mind that chemical poisoning can be something as simple as a bad hangover, a bad reaction to an anti-biotic or over exposure to a toxic chemical of some kind.
It does not mean that somebody actually poisoned you – more likely that you came in contact or ingested something that your body is having a bad reaction to. So don’t start freaking out for no reason.
If you have a hangover headache, it’s too late to follow the best advice… not to over indulge. OTC (over the counter) pain medications may help relieve the headache, but what your body really needs to get rid of the hangover is to be re-hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids. Water is best. However if nausea is an additional problem, then rehydrate slowly. Gulping down large amounts of water can put the kidneys into shock and the water is passed right through you without doing any of it’s important detoxing or rehydrating work.
Some penicillin-based drugs will cause a thirsty type of headache. One example is amoxicillin-clavulic acid which is a combination drug sometimes used to treat many types of infections from sinusitis to pneumonia to STD’s. You may know it by its trade name, Augmentin®. Among many side effects that can occur with the use of Augmentin are headache and increased thirst. Although with many medications, symptoms such as these are trivial, if you experience these side effects after using Augmentin, you should report them immediately to your health care provider.
Over exposure or ingestion of many herbicides and pesticides can cause increased thirst and severe headaches. If you experience a headache after using gardening chemicals or other pest control products, immediately contact your doctor. Don’t take chances here – your life may be at risk.
If you look on the Internet, you’ll find a plethora of web sites that offer homeopathic and alternative methods of dealing with the headache-thirst combo. However, this type of headache can be life threatening. Unless you are sure that the reason behind your thirsty-headache is that you partied too hearty, seek professional medical help to find the cause and cure for this type of headache!
