Migraine Management

Have you ever suffered such a bad headache it was almost like somebody was playing the bongo drums in your head? If so, you are among the millions of people who suffer from chronic migraines. Migraines can be agonizingly painful. You become tremendously sensitive to light and the sound of a pin dropping sends painful vibrations through your head. In severe cases sufferers may experience limb numbness, hallucinations, nausea and vomiting. There are a few culprits responsible for the onset of a migraine. Hormones, stress, dehydration, even the food you eat can trigger a migraine, which is what we now…

Mean MSG

MSG, or mono sodium glutamate, is an artificial flavour enhancer found most familiarly in Chinese take outs. It is arguably an unnecessary addition to foods, particularly if fresh ingredients (which are generally fuller in flavour) are used and because of its ill effects on so many people. Even the smallest amount can provoke severs headaches. It seems to act as a vasodilator, which means it opens and closes the blood vessels in the head, and this is exactly what happens during a migraine. If you are risking a Chinese take out night, ALWAYS request your foods to be MSG free. Most restaurants will be happy to comply, but if not, find another restaurant!

Nasty Nitrates

Popular foods like hot dogs, salami, bacon and other cured meats are full of preservatives. They have very little (if any) nutritional value and are full of saturated fats. If this alone is not enough to convince you to avoid these criminal foods consider this; One of preservatives used are nitrates and this nasty addition has been known to be carcinogenic and provoke migraines. Avoid these murderous meats at all costs.

Cheeky Caffeine

To be completely fair, all fingers cannot point to caffeine. It does act as a vasoconstrictor, which limits blood flow through the blood vessels in your head, but a little caffeine can actually relieve a headache. But because it is such a fine line, it is recommended to avoid it completely if it notably triggers a migraine.

Aspartame Attentiveness

A few studies do show a direct link between this artificial sweetener and headaches, but there is no conclusive evidence to prove it affects everybody. Keep a diary of the foods you eat for a few weeks and if you suffer a migraine, you can check to see if any of the foods or beverages you consumed that day contained aspartame.

Terrible Tyramine

This amino acid triggers sensitivity in almost 30% of migraine sufferers. Foods to look out for include aged cheeses, pickles herrings, chicken livers, fresh baked foods made from yeast, lima beans, Italian beans, lentils, snow peas, navy beans, pinto beans, peanuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and sesame seeds. Try eliminating these foods to establish if it brings you any relief.

Chocolate Crisis

Sorry to say, but chocolate is another potential cause of a migraine. The chemical compound it contains called phenylethylamine is the culprit. Avoiding chocolate as much as possible will help to avoid a migraine (easier said than done I know).

Alcohol Awareness

Alcohol will dehydrate the brain and can also dilate blood vessels in your brain, which in return will cause a headache. In addition to this a chemical called congeners found mostly in hard liquors will have the same affect. Alcohol consumption should be limited for a multitude of reasons and being the cause of a migraine is another one! If you suffer from migraines always have remedies on hand to relieve the pain. If it becomes too unbearable, ask a family member or friend to take you to the doctor immediately.

Consider aromatherapy as an alternative treatment for migraines. Essential oils containing a blend of peppermint, lavender, and rosemary go to work quickly by opening the flow of blood vessels in the brain which can rapidly bring some much needed relief.
