Mistakes to Avoid on the Treadmill – Part 1

Regular workouts on a treadmill are fantastic for getting good quality cardio exercise. If you really want to maximize the benefit you get from treadmills you should learn to avoid some pretty common mistakes. By achieving the correct posture for example you avoid many possible injuries and unnecessary stress, your walking will be smoother and go for longer.

Never get on the treadmill while it’s moving at full speed. The correct way is to have one foot on each side of the belt and start the treadmill moving at a slow speed. Once you are on board you can gradually increase the speed. Take the time to notice where the emergency switch to stop the treadmill is located. It’s often indicated with a red light.

Something so simple can seem like silly advice but really you’d be surprised at how many people have injured themselves trying to step onto a treadmill incorrectly. Usually they have been surprised by underestimating it’s speed or the sudden jerk when it first begins to move.

Keep children away from treadmills, even if you are in the room with them using it.

It’s bad form to hold on to the railings of the treadmill as you walk. You may do this for a feeling of added stability but it compromises your walking posture. You need to learn to use the treadmill without holding on even if it means going down to slower speeds and working your way back up.

Take the time make sure you maintain good posture while on the treadmill. Avoid hunching your shoulders or looking down to read books or watch television. This will only help to reinforce a bad walking posture and negate against your fitness goals. The correct walking position is to have your head up and eyes straight ahead. By following this simple advice you’ll avoid lots of potential back pain, neck pain and shoulder stress.
