SOURCES AND BENEFITS OF CALCIUM

Calcium is the basic component present in bones and teeth. It is essential for the clotting of blood, maintenance of muscle contraction and plays a major role in the growth cycle.

It is also responsible for the lowering of the blood pressure. Calcium is made use by the human body for the proper working of heart, muscles and nerves. Intake of calcium rich foods maintains the body fit and healthy. The calcium that enters the blood is thus carried by various organs for the specific functions to take place. The extra calcium will be stored in the bones and if any sign of calcium deficiency is found, the body will immediately distribute the calcium to compensate the needs.

The rich sources of calcium are milk, cheeses, yogurts and dairy products. Several non-dairy products also act as rich sources of calcium. Fish bones, sardines, tinned salmon and pilchards are good sources of calcium. Few other sources of calcium are dried fruit, white bread, nuts, pulses, green leafy vegetables, sesame seeds and soya bean products. Some of the vegetable sources of calcium are okra and curly kale. Bottled water, breakfast cereals, soya milk alternatives and orange juice are also fortified with extra calcium. A glass of 200 ml of milk constitutes about 55 percent of the calcium.

A high dose of calcium strengthens the bones and teeth and prevents the gums from bleeding. Calcium deficiency ends up in the formation of cracks in bones, bleeding of the gums and falling of the teeth.
