Ageing not only affects our physical bodies, but also our psychological state of mind and our quality of life. For this article we will look at the ageing of our skin. Did you know that there are in fact 2 ageing processes involved in our overall ageing? One which we have no control over, while the other we do have some control over.
1.Intrinsic (internal) ageing: This ageing process is due to the genes we inherit from our parents.
2.Extrinsic (external) ageing: Considering that you have normal healthy genes, Extrinsic ageing is responsible for premature ageing of the skin. This is the ageing that occurs due to environmental factors such as sun exposure, and smoking. Exposure to the sun’s Ultraviolet (UV) light accounts for 90% of symptoms of premature ageing. Anti-aging? Is it a real possibility?
I’ve been giving a lot of thought to this concept of anti-aging because every time I turn on my computer I see ads for anti-aging x, y, and z products.
Is anti aging possible? Can it be a reality? Do you want it to be real?
You might disagree – but in short – I don’t think so.
Aging is a process that starts when we are born – we get older every day! It’s that plain and simple; then again I am a developmental psychologist and look at forward development; not backward.
Aging is a process, it has a beginning, a middle and an end. My focus in my writings is that giant middle – the part of life when we start to see and feel some of the inevitable declines that happen with age…but where we can still make choices about how well we will live in our own futures.
