Multiple Sclerosis Treatments – What You Need to Know

If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with MS (multiple sclerosis), then you are already aware how ravaging this disease can be. However, there is a lot about the disease that you may not be aware of. If you suffer from multiple sclerosis, or watch others suffer, you see what happens to the person’s body, but what you don’t see is what the disease is doing inside the body. There are many multiple sclerosis treatments, but they vary as much as the disease itself.

MS is an autoimmune disease that causes the body to attack it’s own cells and tissues. But, why does this happen and what causes it? The cause of multiple sclerosis is still a mystery. It is known however, that the immune system doesn’t respond normally and attacks the covering of nerve fibers. The nerve fibers affected are in the optic nerves, brain, and spinal cord.

Early symptoms can often be brief and sometimes even missed. They may include numbness, tingling, weak limbs, unsteadiness, and double or blurred vision. Usually as the disease continues on, the symptoms become more severe. Every case of MS varies, but in later stages symptoms include paralysis that is either partial or complete, loss of body part awareness, blindness, memory issues, incontinence, seizures and respiratory problems. Brain Foods to Improve Cognitive Skills

It’s normal for people over the age of 50 to experience a little “senior moments” such as forgetting where you place the keys. Just as it can turn metal to rust, the process of oxidation destroys brain cells – thus causing mental decline.

But the good news is, the process can very much be reversed. Gone are the days when science thought the brain was fixed and mental unavoidable. Numerous scientific study have shown the brain to be “plastic” (malleable) and that not only do brain exercises improve mental functions, eating certain foods can also help improve, or at least slow down, the process of mental decline.

Because it’s the process of oxidation that causes the decline, it stands to reason that anti-oxidants are the answer to preventing eventual dementia. Seems easy enough right? Consume more foods that contain anti-oxidants.

The problem, however, is the wide variety of anti-oxidants. Remember that the body is an extremely complex being – and thus there is no “secret ingredient” for the cure of any problems. The best practice is always to consume a wide variety of healthy foods so as to keep the subtle balance of a healthy body.

With that said, here are some foods you should consumer more of, if you have not already done so.

1. The hippocampus (the part of your brain that turns short-term memory into long-term ones) contains a chemical called ellagitannins. Ellagitannins often decline as you age but strawberries, raspberries and blueberries contain large amounts of them.
2. The striatum (the part of your brain that’s used for spatial memory) contains a chemical called proanthocyanins. These can be found in blueberries, grapes and red wine.

Multiple Sclerosis – Causes, Symptoms and Treatments

Multiple sclerosis, also called as MS in short, is a nervous disorder which affects the central nervous system .i.e. brain and spinal cord. This causes imbalance between body organs and the brain which results in down fall of vision, hearing capabilities and muscle strength. It is because of lack of a substance in nerves called myelin which is gradually destroyed due to MS disorder.

This myelin serves as a shield cover for the nerves which transmit brain signals. Without this myelin, it’s very difficult for brain and spinal cord to coordinate with each other and this result in the failure of functioning of many organs in the body. There are generally 4 stages in multiple sclerosis from initial stage to final stage called as ‘progressive MS’.

In most of the cases multiple sclerosis is not a fatal disorder. However there are some exceptions in rare conditions where they suffer from other parallel diseases to MS. Proper treatment and care can help MS affected patients to lead a normal life for longer time. Read more…

All About Cerebral Palsy

What is CEREBRAL PALSY (CP)?

Cerebral Palsy is a term describing a condition where a trauma caused to the brain adversely affects the motor skills of a child. CEREBRAL refers to the BRAIN; and PALSY is “Lack of required muscle control”. Putting it together it is “Lack of muscle coordination caused by trauma to the Brain”.

UNDERSTANDING CP

It may be said that CP is a condition caused by injury to the brain or nerves during, before or shortly after the delivery of the child. It may be result of some injury or disease caused during the first three years of childhood.

TYPES OF CEREBRAL PALSY

CP may be classified into four categories:
• Spastic-. Caused due to muscle stiffness which makes reaching or walking difficult.
• Athetoid (or dyskinetic)- Caused due some lack of balance in walking and also muscle tics.
• Ataxic – This includes balance disorder and some difficulty in perception of depth.
• Mixed- Children with mixed CP have both the muscle stiffness of spastic cerebral palsy and lack of balance in movement of athetoid cerebral palsy. Read more…
