The Basics of Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a very aggressive cancer that is caused by exposure to asbestos. Approximately 20 percent of cancers caused by asbestos are peritoneal mesothelioma. This form of the cancer manifests itself in the mesothelial cells of the abdomen when the asbestos fibers become embedded in the space between the cells. Over these years, the asbestos fibers irritate the parietal layer that covers the stomach cavity and they begin to produce cancer cells. Fluid builds up and tumors eventually form.

What are the Symptoms?
Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma are swelling and pain in the abdomen, diarrhea or constipation, unexplained weight loss, nausea and vomiting, and the appearance of lumps under the skin in the abdominal area.

How is It Treated?
Since this type of cancer is usually diagnosed very late in its development, a positive mesothelioma prognosis is not likely, and treatment options are limited. Chemotherapy and radiation are typically used to threat the cancer, along with medication to provide pain relief. For many patients, surgery is not an option because at the point of discovery, the cancer has already spread too far and the patient’s poor health may make him or her too weak to recover from the trauma of surgery. What treatment would I have if I had your Cancer?

If I had been diagnosed with your cancer 20 years ago I would have accepted any treatment recommended by my doctors because after all they are the experts. However today that is not so and that’s because of one simple reason, knowledge. The study of cancer has taught me many facts which of course I was ignorant of back then. I have learnt why we only have those 3 treatments of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, I have learnt of the ineffectiveness of those 3 treatments, I have learnt who controls the cancer industry and I have learnt there are other, better ways to overcome all cancers.

Now days being 20 years wiser if I was diagnosed with cancer I would apply a little common sense and ask myself a few questions, for instance why did I get cancer in the first place and if I get it surgically removed what’s going to stop it from growing back again since surgery doesn’t address that. Also does it make any sense to use nuclear radiation to burn it out or a poison as in chemotherapy to try and remove it which also won’t stop it coming back. People today accept those treatments because they believe they are the only ways to cure cancer. Read more…

Vitorin May Be an Unhealthy Choice For Lowering Cholesterol

The FDA has begun an investigation into ezetimibe and simvastatin, the two compounds found in Vytorin which are designed to lower cholesterol levels.

A 5-year trial was conducted to see if the combined ingredients could “reduce cardiovascular events in patients with a diagnosis of aortic stenosis.” The trial found that no, there were no benefits. However, a larger percentage of those treated with Vytorin (as opposed to the placebo group) were diagnosed with and died from various forms of cancer. Whether that was cause and effect is not known yet.

Two other ongoing trials will end in 2010 and 2012. I have to wonder about those patients taking part in the trials. Why would anyone take that kind of chance with their health?

Meanwhile, the drug Baycol was removed from the market after numerous deaths were attributed to its use.

Cases such as this are a good reason not to take any drugs that haven’t been around for a good long while – unless, of course, your condition is terminal and they offer some relief.

If you’re taking Vytorin, you might want to go back to your doctor and ask for something safer. Or, since all pharmaceuticals carry risk, and since cholesterol drugs seem to carry side effects that lead to death, it seems like it might be a good idea to see what you can do without drugs.

According to the Mayo Clinic site, the first thing to do is reduce the amount of saturated and trans fats in your diet. Unfortunately, that means staying away from store-bought cookies, crackers, and cakes. (unless you read the ingredients and find there are no trans fats)
