Reclaiming Your Independence With The Help of Wheelchairs

A dear friend of mine was not doing so well. Her health was getting worse and so was her general feeling of well-being. I couldn’t blame her either. If I were not able to do the things in life I normally do, I’d probably feel the same way. I can say right now that anybody, whether they’re in the same spot because of their weight, their health, or their age, they should do the same thing she did. She’s back to her old self again. It didn’t happen right away though. She had to get used to the idea of needing to get a wheelchair first. Getting a wheelchair to her represented the idea that it was over, that the disease won, and that she had given up. After some encouragement and some time online looking at what’s available, she started to get excited. It didn’t take us long to find out about power wheelchairs and scooters of all kinds like the jazzy electric wheel chairs and everything available for it. We also found out about lightweight wheelchairs, and motorized wheelchairs. Read more…

Mental disabilities and so many other kinds of disabilities, that it would be a mammoth task to name them all or to list them all here. Suffice to say that there are some disabilities that are not visibly obvious. Read more…

Wheelchairs — A Guide To Independence

A dear friend of mine was not doing so well. She seemed to be getting more and more distant and blue because her health was getting worse. I can understand how she felt her depression came from frustration at being unable to do basic things like run errands or get around the house. If you find yourself in a situation like my friend for whatever reason, whether it’s because of your health or your age or your weight, then you need to do what she did. She’s happier now than I have seen her in years. It didn’t happen overnight, but once she accepted that she had to have a wheelchair, that was the first step (no pun intended). She told me once that she felt like she was succumbing to her illness by caving in and getting a wheelchair. I told her that it wasn’t like giving up! And wheelchairs had come a long way in the last 10 years. We went online together to look at the newest developments in wheelchairs, and she started to get really excited about owning one. There was lots mobility wheelchairs to choose from: lightweight travel wheelchairs, wheelchairs with motors, jazzy electric wheelchairs, of which there was a good selection. Read more…

Disabled: Unsung heroes

UNSUNG HEROES

It was twenty five years when my wife and I made our vows to each other, one of them being to love honour and cherish in sickness and in health till death us do part.

Little did we know what these vows would mean so far down the line? I thank the Lord daily for the loving, caring, wonderful person He brought into my life. She cares for me both mentally and physically, uncomplaining even when I’m miserable, difficult or a right pain in the neck. I cannot express how grateful I am for her love and care.

But there are other unsung heroes in this world. Those women and men who unselfishly give of their time to work with and for the sick, aged, disabled, infirm or abandoned children to name but a few, cannot be praised and thanked enough. Read more…

Portable Wheelchairs: Lifts and ramps keep you moving

You’ve likely discovered that portable wheelchairs don’t have to be a limitation. Adjusting to new circumstances is hard enough however it can sometimes feel like you’ve been closed off from the world. Here are some suggestions about lifts and ramps that may be an answer to your problems. For many the idea of living in a double storey apartment seems more of a nightmare, thankfully you no longer have to live with boundaries. You may ask ‘how?’ the answer to your question is an ‘electric wheelchair lift’. Stair lifts seem to be a general feature in most homes. The stair wall is the perfect place to attach a wheelchair lift allowing you mobility between the different levels. Once you find that you no longer need a wheelchair or a stair lift feel free to have it uninstalled with little trouble. You can say you’re spoilt for choice with seven wheelchair lifts to choose from. With the lift folding into the vehicle or simply being attached to the rear bumper mobility is no longer restrictive. Fortunately there is nothing to be worried about as the driver. You may wonder what if I own a van? wonder no more as specially designed lifts can be fitted for physically challenged drivers. If you have difficulty getting into a van a quick solution is a wheelchair ramp. An example of this is a modular wheelchair ramp, semi permanent and strong in form. Threshold ramps are the perfect solution to small steps or entryways making for ease of movement. Track ramps are used in homes to allow wheelchairs to travel up and down a flight of stairs and also are used to get into vehicles. If traveling is something you do on a regular basis there are other forms of ramps specifically for this purpose you may wish to research. Tri-fold wheelchair ramps have been cleverly designed and built into the actual van allowing ease of access through the side. Read more…

Issues Affecting the Disabled And Appropriate Solutions To Address Them

During the Nazi rule, the physically and mentally handicapped were set aside for mercy killing. In 1939, Hitler himself passed a degree requiring physicians to carry out mercy killing of patients considered incurable. Today, the new Nazis are those neglectful of the vulnerable persons or suffocate progress of human-life in general and lives of the disabled people in particular.

Society looks at them as forgotten people -whose “best fate” is extinction. In fact, they are nurtured into destitute men and women and sustained to be so by the community -inclusive of the same non-government organisations claiming to be manading their plight. Specifically within the community, the socio-economic and socio-cultural set-up and decision-making can be critically reviewed.

Moving around rural and slum areas can bring back a lot of discoveries. Among them, will be a simple fact of the physically and mentally handicapped having been tied-up on ropes for fear of being raped or stoned to death; are kept in the backyard -for being “not presentable” and above all; “frightening” to visitors or treated like convicted prisoners -whose main activity (physical and mental) is set to receiving food.

But remember, these are human beings -entitled to dignifying treatment and living. They, for example, deserve access and/or right to medical attention, to learning opportunities, to movement (play and exercise), to employment, to appropriate technology (that considers their vulnerability), access to recreational facilities, right to a healthy environment and, to participate in development of their countries.
