Would Partnering With Your Patients Increase Patient Compliance?

When patients are asked what their priorities are in their medical care, they state that they want a physician and office that will partner with them in their medical journey. Patients want to feel that they are on the same team as their physician and medical office and that, together, they will address medical issues and concerns as they arise.

The primary need that the patient has is that of certainty. While we know there are no guarantees in anyone’s medical care or treatment, the patient needs to feel certain of the relationship we are promising them when they are in our medical offices. The needs of the patient are certainly clinical, yet the emotional need to connect with us and form a relationship overrides everything else. Once that relationship is securely established, they will trust us enough to follow our directives more readily.

In order to truly partner with your patients, there needs to be a transparency in your office about the responsibilities on both the medical office and that of the patient. When the medical office states their promises of patient care and follow up, the patient will be less likely to have unrealistic expectations as to how their care and concerns are treated.

When the patient fully understand up front what their responsibilities are in their care, they will feel more involved in their care, not that care is “done to them.” These responsibilities on both ends should involve the full spectrum of issues involved with care – scheduling of appointments, time frames for call backs based on urgency, payment issues, explanations of treatment and diagnosis, treatment compliance, and payment. Tips For Recognizing a Sinus Headache

Many patients who believe they have symptoms of a sinus headache seek medical treatment only to find their pain is caused by either a migraine or a tension headache.

Before you add up the symptoms of a sinus headache, take a look at the math. In one recent study of 30 subjects with self-diagnosed sinus headache, 97% (29) described symptoms that pretty much proved they had a migraine. Besides migraines, other underlying health problems can cause headache. The truth is that many types of headache are symptoms of severe medical problems that really need to be ruled out by your doctor. In fact, although there are no real symptoms of a sinus headache, the true sinus headache is a symptom of acute or chronic sinusitis.

While sinus headache is a symptom rather than a disease, there are a few conditions that distinguish it from migraine. Read more…
