If you have recurring wrist pain and suspect it is carpal tunnel syndrome, there are simple tests to confirm it. Aching wrists and numb hands can be caused by other conditions, but the most common symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome are numbness or tingling in the fingers and pain in the hand, fingers or wrist.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by compression of the median nerve as it passes through the wrist other conditions that can exacerbate that include arthritis, pregnancy, obesity and hypothyroidism.

There are three main tests:

In the Tinel Test, the doctor presses on (or taps) the median nerve in the patient’s wrist. If the patient feels increased tingling or a shock-type sensation, that’s a good indication of carpal tunnel syndrome.

The Phalen Test is one you can do yourself. Hold your arms straight out in front of you at ninety degrees to your body. Press the backs of your hands together for one minute. This compresses the carpal tunnel and will cause similar symptoms. Read more…

How Obesity Causes Pain

The U.S. Center for Disease Control has declared that obesity is an epidemic. One in three Americans are obese, twice as many as in the 1970’s. Soon, being overweight will surpass smoking as the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S. The accelerating increase in obesity among children is also alarming. It is attributed to less activity and more sedentary behavior (computer and video games, TV) and eating more high-calorie snack and fast foods. Ironically, the world now has almost as many over-nourished as under-nourished people. Read more…

Obesity – Do You Know the 1 Major Difference Between Being Obese Or Not?

I woke up one morning, looked in the mirror and saw someone else! That was wishful thinking. I am a former obese person and know the feelings I had all those years when I refused to have a mirror close to me. I still remember the awful feelings in my mind about what I had become. I could see the shame on peoples faces. They were polite, but could I ever feel the stares. I learned to hate myself and continued to eat in order to sooth my pain. Until one day, I really had had enough and started searching for the better me. You know what? Under all that skin, I was there and I am so proud of myself today. Sharing my pride has become a mission for me and I need to tell you why. Do you want to listen?

Sugary drinks are a hazard, because they supply pure sugar and therefore a high contingent of calories as well as a high glycemic index (GI) (The glycemic index is represented by a score between 1 and 100. It helps to judge carbohydrate rich foods in its effect on the amount of blood glucose and the release of insulin in your blood.) These calories are taken in additionally, without your being aware of it. Read more…
