Overcoming Panic Attacks and the False Wizard
Overcoming panic attacks is a critical quest of each person who suffers from this debilitating disorder. The sudden rapid heartbeat, difficult breathing, nausea, feelings of dread, even chest pains that resemble heart attacks…who would go through these terrifying episodes if they could prevent it? But the person sensing a panic attack coming on feels totally controlled by an unseen malevolent power.
Some therapies focus on conceptually recognizing that one’s fears are irrational, in a left brain kind of way. Unfortunately, tied to this approach is the value judgment that the person suffering is weak and is just not putting forth the needed effort to control their thought processes or emotions. Some very misguided therapists will even try to convince the sufferer that his or her symptoms aren’t even real!
However, the most insightful psychologists of today focus on the role of the subconscious mind in perceiving a threat when one does not actually exist. Our subconscious mind is a repository of all kinds of mysterious impulses and entrenched belief systems. It is loathe to allow the rational mind or the knowing heart to enter into its labyrinth of hidden secrets. Read more…

The OCD Cure: How to help yourself or a loved one control their OCD
It was about five years ago when my significant other began to express what I considered the most bizarre behavior. It started with flicking on and off the light switch. Before she would leave a room, she had to flick it off, and then on at least once. I would ask her why she was doing this and she’d just laugh and say something like, “I was just checking how bright the lights were in the corner.” And I didn’t really think much of it. At the time, I had no idea that the beginnings of this behavior would start my quest to find her an OCD cure, while simultaneously finding relief for my anxiety.
Not long after, she would start flicking the lights on and off more than once before she left or entered a room. She would flick them on and off in a quantity that was an even number(although it took me months to realize the significance of even numbers for her). Read more…

Relaxation for Anxiety: My favorite relaxation method for sufferers of anxiety
The most critical component of ending panic attacks and generalized anxiety disorder for good is learning how to properly relax. Lifetime sufferers of panic and anxiety who first attempt relaxation techniques often realize with astonishment that they never learned to relax properly.
In many ways, anxiety is much like a snowball effect, or a vicious circle when it comes to tension in the body. Anxiety will tighten the muscles, making the sufferer feel tight and rigid…and oftentimes the sufferer does not realize they feel so tense as they actually are. Tense muscles tend to trigger the subconscious mind that there is a logic behind the tenseness, so the body will release a dose of adrenaline through the fight or flight response, sometimes at only mild doses. This will only trigger more anxiety. It almost becomes a “chicken or egg” scenario…it becomes difficult to tell which came first, the tension or the anxiety. Read more…

Smoking and Panic: Is smoking a practical activity to relieve panic?
There is without doubt a correlation between smoking and panic. For years, there have also been studies that links smoking to depression. Ask anyone who has panic disorder and generalized anxiety disorder what happens when they puff on a cigarette. They will claim that the first reaction is a feeling of being at ease, but this is only the psychological reaction of submitting to a drug when one is addicted to it.
The second reaction is the raising of stress levels caused most likely by the increased levels of carbon monoxide in the nicotine. Oftentimes, the raised stress levels can mentally fatigue the smoking, making his slightly tired, yet anxious afterward.
The biggest misconception where smokers logic starts to go wrong, is thinking that smoking cigarettes is a “be all end all” stress reliever. As stated above, there is a moment of instant gratification as the smoker takes the first few puffs of their cigarette. This is simply because they have a psychological and physical addiction. They get a psychological sense of relief when they get their “fix”. Read more…
