Sleep Apnea and the Risk of Heart Disease

Sleep apnea can cause night time breathing to become erratic; shallow or stop completely for anything between 10 and 120 seconds. These sleep apnea symptoms, along with snoring, are caused by blockage, either completely or partially, in the airway. This is brought on by an obstruction in air flow through fatty tissue in the throat or neck or by the uvula (the small dangling tissue at the back of the throat). Oxygen levels drop suddenly, resulting in breathing arrests, and this can occur several hundred times throughout what should be a normal night’s sleep.

Untreated sleep apnea can lead to Type 2 Diabetes; weight gain; absent-mindedness or memory problems and incidentally poses a real risk for drivers who are unaware that they are sufferers, as extreme exhaustion can result in falling asleep behind the wheel. Read more…

The Connection between Weight and Snoring

Although there are millions of us that have a problem with snoring at night, there are very few of us that actually understand how it is caused. Believe it or not, understanding the causes behind your snoring can help you to overcome it. If you are simply listening to suggestions that may come from you at every angle in order to help you with your snoring, it is very unlikely that you’re going to be able to do anything effective with it.

Snoring is typically caused by an obstruction in the soft palate of the throat area, typically because this area is relaxing while we are sleeping. One way that it can be increased, however, is if we are carrying additional weight on our body. Not only can this be bad for us in a lot of different ways, it can also increase the amount of snoring that we do because it helps to obstruct the area further. If you really want to be able to stop snoring, the first thing that you should do is to reduce the amount of weight that you are carrying around on your body. Read more…

Having Happy Healthy Kids – Child Obesity Prevention

Child obesity is believed to be a growing epidemic in this country. Children overall, are less active and spend more time watching TV and playing video games then they ever have before. An estimated 80% of overweight children will grow up to be overweight adults. They will struggle with weight their entire lives. They will be more susceptible to diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and high cholesterol. Obesity can also lead to joint and back problems. Obese people tend to have shorter life spans and a lower quality of life as they get older.

An essential way to keep your children from being overweight is to keep them active. The more time they spend up and moving the better off they will be. Get your kids involved in sports and other outdoor activities. These can include gardening, skating, camping, canoeing, swimming, and the list could go on forever. If your child plays an organized sport, go to their events and practices. Cheer for them and offer them constant support and encouragement. Never make your children feel bad if they play poorly because that will discourage them from paying future sports. Encourage your children to use the stairs instead of elevators, walk or ride their bike places instead of getting a ride. Lead your children by example by walking with them. Read more…

Is Sleep Apnea a Common Disorder?

I did not understand why my brother was constantly tired and had no energy!

His wife was the first to suspect Sleep Apnea. After being diagnosed with this condition and getting treatment, there was a dramatic change in his ability to function during the day.

What we did not know was that Sleep Apnea is a serious, potentially life-threatening condition that is far more common than generally understood.

Understanding More About Sleep Apnea:

Sleep Apnea is characterized by a complete or partial blocking of the upper airway, causing the person to have irregular breathing or to stop breathing for a span of approximately 10 to 20 seconds while asleep. This pattern continues several times throughout the night, usually without the person even knowing it.

While Apnea is much less prevalent than common Snoring, the medical implications associated with this disorder can be serious. As breathing becomes very shallow or stops, there is a drop in the blood oxygen level and a rise in the blood carbon dioxide level. When sufferers do not get the amount of oxygen needed this can put the person at serious health risk. Read more…

Snoring Causes And Treatment

A snoring problem may seem to be small but is quite grave if understood it properly. It is a warning that you are not able to breathe properly when you sleep. This means that your body is not getting sufficient oxygen and you strive and struggle to gain it as you snore. Also it is a sign that you have habits that are making the passage of air blocked. The snoring problem is also a problem for your partner, who is unable to sleep because of your snoring.

CAUSES:

Snoring is caused when the flow of air in the nasal passages and mouth are blocked or obstructed. Snoring usually occurs right before a person enters deep sleep. At this phase, the muscles in the throat, tongue and soft palate relax. If they relax enough, they block the airway and vibrate together, causing the snoring sound that we all know. Louder snoring occurs when the air passages are narrower, which causes the tissues to vibrate together more and the passage of air to become more vigorous, in turn resulting in louder snoring.
