How Obesity Causes Pain

The U.S. Center for Disease Control has declared that obesity is an epidemic. One in three Americans are obese, twice as many as in the 1970’s. Soon, being overweight will surpass smoking as the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S. The accelerating increase in obesity among children is also alarming. It is attributed to less activity and more sedentary behavior (computer and video games, TV) and eating more high-calorie snack and fast foods. Falling Asleep at the Wheel

According to statistics produced by the National Sleep Foundation, 36% of Americans admit to falling asleep at the wheel! This daytime propensity nod off at the traffic lights could mean you are suffering from Obstructive Sleep Apnea, or OSA.

OSA is present in 18 million Americans, most of whom have no idea they have a problem. 90 – 95% of sufferers are unaware that during their night time sleep, their breathing pauses or arrests altogether for intervals ranging from 10 to 120 seconds at a time. The breathing disorder is the result of blockage in the airflow, caused by fatty tissue in the neck or throat, resulting in a sharp drop in oxygen levels. Read more…

Get Sweating to Beat Hypertension

The number of people with hypertension (high blood pressure) is high and getting higher. Your blood pressure gradually rises as you get older, so as we all live longer it is becoming more common.

High blood pressure often has no symptoms until you have a heart attack, stroke or perhaps develop kidney problems. Blood pressure is measured in by a cuff round your arm, wrist or finger and ideally is around 120/80. A measurement above 140/90 may need some form of treatment. As high blood pressure can be affected by a variety of different factors the best treatment may vary but for most people will include losing weight, exercising and maybe drugs from the doctor.

If you want to start exercising, it is a good idea to see your doctor first for a check up. Once you have got the all clear you can start.

It is a good idea to begin gently with aerobic exercise. That means activities that get you sweaty and breathing a bit harder such as walking, running, cycling or swimming. Aim to build up to half an hour 5 or 6 times a week Read more…
