The Frugality Movement Takes On Healthcare: Essential Reading
The place where the frugality movement and healthcare meet is not an easy place to be. When these two forces meet, which one wins? Saving money is necessary for your financial well being but healthcare costs may be critical to your physical and mental well being. This is an immensely complicated issue that requires a closer look.
The Value Of Health
Your health is priceless. Without your health, you do not have very much. It has been said that he who has his health has everything which implies that he who does not should have a return to a healthy state as his main focus. This is true for everyone. Your health is one of those intangible things that you can take for granted if you have it but you are intensely aware of it if you don’t.
The Impact Of Your Financial Health
Even if you are ill, you still have to be able to pay the bills. You do not want to allow one illness or even several to land you in a financial hole. You do not want to come out of one problem with your health to find yourself knee deep in a financial one that could take years for you to climb back out of.
Health is important but so is the bottom line. You can talk about how health trumps financial concerns but tell that to someone who has enough debt to drown. Quality of life can be brought down in more ways than one.
A Million Ways To Save
There are a million ways to save on healthcare costs. First and foremost, you want to live a healthy lifestyle that keeps your body strong enough to resist all the health problems that it can. This is the number one way to go with the frugality movement and handle your own healthcare cost concerns at the same time. If you do not live a healthy lifestyle with a proper diet, exercise, adequate sleep, stress management, and so on then you are asking for health problems to manifest. If you want to be both frugal and healthy then you need to live a healthy lifestyle.
Beyond this, you can save money on healthcare costs in many ways. You can take advantage of medical tourism and get costly procedures done for half as much or less by getting them done in another country. You can put money into health savings accounts to keep from paying taxes on monies that you spend on healthcare expenses. You can cut insurance costs by raising deductibles and the like.
The essential observation here is to not make this into a competition between healthcare concerns and financial concerns. Both are important and both must be attended to. Healthcare costs are unavoidable after you live a healthy lifestyle and do all you can to not become sick or injured. But they can be lessened through the appropriate frugality. When you allow these two concerns to work in tandem then you can have the best of both worlds.
